You Never See the Rat, But These Signs Say It Is Still There
A rat can stay hidden for days while leaving evidence in places it regularly travels. Droppings are one of the clearest signs. Fresh droppings tend to be darker and softer, while older ones become duller and harder as they dry. Location matters too. Droppings near walls, cabinets, storage areas, attics, garages, or food sources can help reveal where rodents are moving. Several small deposits appearing repeatedly in one area deserve closer attention, even if nobody has seen the animal itself. Smear Marks Can Show a Regular Route Rats often travel along edges rather than crossing open areas. As their bodies repeatedly brush against walls, beams, pipes, or other surfaces, they can leave dark, greasy marks where dirt and body oils accumulate.
